These Small Moments

*******Oh it feels soooo monumental…this burden of mine.  Fast forward to New Year’s Day 2014…how big is this so-called “looming” problem now?  Not quite as big as it was on April 24, 2013, correct?  Of course it’s correct.  What may have seemed as if it were looming over your entire life, is quite small when comparing then and now.  When you are told to focus on the now, it’s not to make you focus only upon what is bothering you right now, but the very millisecond you are existing in.  These mathematically small moments are logically small also.  Keep it moving and just like anything in your rear-view mirror, it always gets smaller with the passage of distance; which is equal to time.  Do you need to readjust the perception of your rear-view mirror’s formula?*******

*******This song rings true for me literally and metaphorically.  Jesus has taken the wheel for me many times in my life.  The time that is most memorable was when I was desperate to be with my boys and attempted to drive to Michigan from California knowing I was heading into a major winter storm.  I had just had my car repaired and packed up my furniture and put it in storage, loaded my car, put my dog in the front seat, prayed w/ my mom and sisters and hit the road.  I smiled as I officially left California via the I-15 freeway into Las Vegas.  The second I drove onto the onramp, my engine died.  I called to Jesus to save me and help me get out of harms way.  Although the wheel had locked up, I was  able to steer the car into the emergency lane that was beginning to open up in front of my car as the needle on the speedometer quickly dropped from 55 m.p.h. to o m.p.h.  The second my car was completely in the emergency lane, my car stopped completely.  I knew I was headed into a certain death as I had already saw the severe storm warnings.  But I didn’t care because I needed and wanted to be with my boys so badly, I would die trying to get to them.  But Jesus literally took the wheel and I’m living with my babies today because he saved me.*******

*******I don’t know about you, but I’ve grown quite weary of talking, fantasizing, dreaming, hoping and wishing.  Nike said, “Just Do It” and that’s exactly what I’m going to do.  I spoke with an academic adviser once and she told me she used to sing, but gave up after she had children and just resigned herself to having a simple career.  I don’t ever want to tell that story or anything close to it.  I’m now on the grind…I’m doing it and I vow that whatever I’m doing, I’ll do it well.  I am confident enough in my abilities that I’ll bet your bottom dollar I’m going to get to where I want to be.  How about you? *******

********I had a conversation with a friend recently about this.  It seems some men think single mothers are looking for fathers for their children.  Not true in every case.  Many men are still in their children’s lives, so what the woman more than likely wants, is a companion.  And it’s a bonus if she wants to have more children with said companion.  If she’s at the bottom of your list of “potentials” and you’re waiting until all of your “options” run out…you may miss out on the best ”option” entirely.*******

*******This is a great quote and I can see how this is true.  For some reason people are always telling me to smile or that I look mean.  I actually met a guy at the VA hospital last week that told me when he saw me he said to himself, “Oh God, here we go.”  Then we began to talk and I was my normal animated, joking self.  It’s not that I don’t have happy thoughts, I guess I just don’t focus on them as much.  I will definitely keep this in mind when in public because the last thing I want to do is scare someone off.  I won’t walk around with a cheesy grin on my face, but I will at least not look like I’m not looking for a fight!  :)*******

*******Have you ever done something so wise you surprised yourself and in turn, gave yourself a pat on the back?  Don’t you just love those moments?  You can go around saying how stupid you were for making a mistake, but that mistake was just to prepare you for your triumph.  Remember that saying, “If at first you can’t do it, try, try again.”?  Well that saying should be stuck in your head because we will undoubtedly make mistakes because we aren’t perfect.  But, what about discovering your mental potential?  I remember being in Security Police Technical Training School in Lackland, TX and we had to do a drill called, “I’m up.  They see me.  I’m down.”  Well, it sounds pretty simple, but try doing it for a half an hour!  With our M-16′s, we had to run in place , then quickly go into a prone position ready to fire, then jump back up and run in place again.  After about 15 minutes I felt my legs burn and cramp up so bad I was sure I would collapse.  But for the next 15 minutes, I took a mental vacation.  Although I could feel the pain, I made myself go into some sort of trance, so I could finish.  Oh, how I wanted to give up!  But no, I made it through because it was a mind over matter situation.  My instructor told me our minds are stronger than our bodies.  He further explained, your body will give up at 80% of your max and if you use your mind to go the other 20%, you will make it.  I don’t know how many times I’ve used this technique to get me through a physically exhausting situation.  I remember during Christmas 2011 I went to one church  and got food from them and put it in a suitcase, then went to another church and got some toys and clothes for my boys and myself.  I put the bag of toys and clothes over my shoulder and dragged that suitcase on and off buses and walked about 2 miles to get home.  I didn’t care that my back, shoulders, neck, arms, hands and thighs felt like I was walking through a deep lake of fire.  My mind took me somewhere else and helped me continue when my body was screaming for me to stop.  I was bound and determined to have food and toys when my babies came home to mama on Christmas.  Now, I’m not telling you all this story because I want your pity.  This is just a perfect example of the potential of my mind.  Do you all have any stories to share?  If you do, leave it in a comment and I’ll post it on the blog and put it on a special “success” page.  Share and share alike!!!*******

He just looks so dapper, handsome and well put together in this suit.  Just like women, men have to take the time to buy a suit and add layers = shirt, ascot or tie, vest,  jacket, pants and shoes.  Please don’t forget to get it tailored to fit you perfectly.  Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.  I once dated a 40 year-old man that refused to wear suits.  He wanted to wear a hat, t-shirt, jeans and sneakers EVERYWHERE.  Gross.  There are times when suits are a better choice, necessary or mandatory.  Whatever the case me be…swag it up!!! *******

This is such a cool song by Fun.: and Janelle Monae.  The video is crazy and hilarious.  I did not expect to laugh at all, so I was taken by surprise.  The best part was all of the stuffing flying out of the stuffed animal was ripped apart on the dance floor.  I think it was the slow motion that got me.  Whoever wrote the treatment for it is very clever.  Enjoy!

*******Forget about the “Joneses”.  What do you already have to be grateful for?  Your life, health, family, friends, job, home, car…YOU.  Trust me, if you sit down and make a list of all of your material and immaterial possessions, you’ll find you have a lot more to be grateful for than you realized.  It doesn’t take much to become jealous of what another has, but it takes even less to appreciate what you have sitting in front of your face or surrounding you.  Take a moment every day to express your gratitude for what you have received and you will be blessed with more than you’ve ever imagined.  I found that once I did this very thing, I became less depressed, angry and impatient when it came to wanting what I wanted.  I learned wanting what I wanted really meant I wanted not just what I thought I deserved, but what everyone else seemed to have.  That doesn’t matter as much to me anymore.  I am truly grateful for all I have and I know, in due time, I will get what I want within reason and if it is what I am supposed to have.*******

Something Worth Dying For

As Valentine’s week draws to a close, my mind wanders to Nell and Jim Hamm, who in 2007 celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. A month before this milestone the couple decided to take a hike in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park situated in Northern California. There, on this walk, just days before their 50th wedding anniversary, Jim was attacked by a 200 pound, eight foot long mountain lion.

This lion, pouncing seemingly from the sky, pinned Jim to the ground. Nell, age 65, didn’t even hear the animal. She turned to find Jim, 70 years young, underneath the lion with his head partially in the animal’s mouth. “He didn’t scream,” Nell later said. “It was a different, horrible plea for help.”

The next few minutes were a fight for life. It was seeing everything important to the couple flashing before their eyes. It was pain and blood and sweat but most of all, love. Nell could have run. She could have gone for help, but she didn’t. There, before her was the most important thing in her life, something worth dying for.

With that in mind she reacted, grabbing a log and begun beating the animal. When that didn’t work, she took a pen from Jim’s pocket and tried to stab one of the eyes of the mountain lion. She poked until the pen was bent and unusable.then she picked up the log again and beat. She beat and beat.

It worked, the lion finally backed off. He looked at Nell one last time and disappeared into the foliage. Nell was afraid to leave her bleeding and dazed husband. She was able to move him about a quarter of a mile to a trail head where she covered him with branches, to protect against another attack then waited for help.

“She saved his life, there’s no doubt about that” said a spokesman for the Department of Fish and Game. When asked if she was a hero however, Nell shook her head no. “You hear remarks of hero. It wasn’t that. We love each other very much.”

In that moment, Nell found one thing in her life worth dying for.she was willing to go toe to toe with a powerful animal and risk her own life for her husband and for their life together. And some do lay down their lives for powerful and positive purposes; some of these purposes are saving another, for our freedom, for a child.But dying for most of us isn’t about literally wrestling mountain lions to free a loved one. Instead, dying might be confronting our fears and anxieties to help our loved one. Dying might be doing something we don’t like, because he/she does. Or, dying might simply be biting our tongue instead of speaking out and hurting another’s feelings.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. may have said it best, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Die a little today for something powerful and positive that is worth dying for.and in so doing save your life and another’s along the way.Happy Valentine’s week!

*******What a great story.  It nearly brought tears to my eyes.  To love someone so much to risk your life for is true love.  I do have people I would risk my life for in my life currently and I wouldn’t trade them for the world.  Do you have someone similar?  I sincerely hope you do because that brings meaning to your life.  No one is saying you have to live for another, it’s just that when you do, life takes a whole different turn.  Try being a parent.  These children we bring into this world depend on us for life.  What a huge burden to bear.  If the job of a parent is taken seriously, one would relish in teaching another human being the ways of life.  Do or don’t do.  Do or die.  Do or get done.  Live and let live.  It is all quite simplistic until you come to laying your life on the line for someone you love.  It isn’t easy and it isn’t hard if you look at it the correct way.  Loving someone to possible death is the greatest love of all.  If you have someone in your life that fits this bill, cherish them.  ’Til death do you part.*******

*******I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this live version of “Busted Heart (Hold On To Me)”.  They really blew me away by using instruments not normally used today.  A xylophone?!  Awesome.  This is a great song the vast majority of us can relate to.  When your heart is broken, it literally feels like you are falling apart and to be be comforted is  usually one of the top three things needed to go on.  I vowed last year to never let my heart get broken again.  Although, I really can’t keep it from happening again without a shadow of a doubt, at least I know how to best prevent it and who to turn to if it does.*******

*******There’s nothing in the world like having a peaceful mind.  A mind free of revenge tactics, hateful thoughts and spiteful plans.  I admit to thinking of these things in the past, but I would never carry them out.  Now, I choose to just let it go.  Some things need to be addressed immediately, but most things call for turning the other cheek.  It will get you nowhere in life to constantly cook up schemes to pay back those that have harmed you.  They did it.  It’s done.  Whatever you do unto others, shall be done unto you.  I remember that not because I long for the person that caused me pain to feel the same, but because I have no intentions of having it come back to me in any way.  Even if it didn’t I wouldn’t want to.  I just don’t believe in deliberately harming or bringing harm to another.  So, where would it get me to have these thoughts in my mind?  Nowhere but stuck inside my own mind when I should be doing the best I can to move forward.*******

*******I have been a fan of Sade’s since high school.  I’ve always been mesmerized by her voice and at one point, wanted to sound like her.  I tried and realized there is and should be only one Sade.  I used to play her greatest hits album like it was going out of style!  Sade is timeless.  It took her eight years to come out with another album this last time, but it was like she never left!  I love “By Your Side” because that is how I want to feel towards the man I’m with.  I want to love him enough for him to be someone I’d want to stick by through thick and thin and I’d want him to feel the same towards me.

*******It’s amazing how many love songs and poems that have been written.  They are sung by many, copied by thousands and recited by more.  Even as children we are affected by love.  It only intensifies with more understanding as we age.  Loving and losing is usually identified as heartbreak.  Heartbreak feels just so.  It literally feels like your heart has been broken in two.  The saying “…died from a broken heart” has been proven.  It sounds crazy, but I read the story of a mother who died of a myocardial infarction the day after receiving news her son had died at war.  You can read more about this subject here http://shine.yahoo.com/healthy-living/really-die-broken-heart-study-175000128.html.  For those that are in love, they soon become poets and songwriters.  Love sparks this creativity that never existed in a person prior to falling in love with a particular person.  People sing, hum  and speak words of love.  It is a glorious feeling indeed which is why some of the most famous songs and poems are written about love.  I, too, have written many a song and poem regarding the object of my affection.  I have also written some heartbreak songs and poems and believe you me, I prefer the former.  I hope to write and sing many more songs, poems and stories about love and I wish you all the best in regards to your hearts desire. *******

*******A co-worker I thought hated me once said, “If you just focused on one thing, you’d be amazing at it.”  I was totally flabbergasted!  I thought I was doing well by doing a bagillion things at once, but apparently, I was dead wrong.  I still divide my focus upon at least 4 different things and it is only moderately effective.  One task has more of my focus than the others, so that one is going well.  The others?  Well, look at my blog for the last week.  I stopped making the time to do one of my favorite things.  Write.  It’s suffering and I don’t like it.  I guess what I can do is schedule my schedule.  I’m not making progress with my current up-in-the-air schedule.  I don’t want anything I am doing to suffer, so I had better learn to pay attention and accomplish one thing at a time by making good use of my allotted time throughout the day.*******

I’m not sure why he avoids me like the plague sometimes. Then there are times when he welcomes me with open arms. He acts like he needs to run from me if he is in my presence for too long. I just want to tell him how much I love him, how long I’ve loved him and how long I will love him—forever. Since the day my brown eyes met his hazel eyes, I haven’t been the same. Oh, how I’ve tried to run, to hide, to turn my feelings off to no avail. It’s as if they have a mind of their own. I once read that no matter what the mind wants, the heart will always trump it. I see him behaving the same way I used to, but now I’m finally ready to look him in the eyes and say, “Stop running, stop looking, for what you have sought after for years is right here in front of you. And you know it mister.” That would take a lot of guts—more than I think I have right now. What if I were to say that or something similar? What would he say? Would he laugh it off as he’s done in the past, or will he say, “Okay. You caught me. Now what?” I would then gingerly say, “Now we just go with the flow, nothing forced and not too quickly.” I think that would do the trick. Yet, here I am—writing what my bleeding heart feels. I’d feel sorry for myself if it weren’t for the fact that a lot of people have been in my shoes. It’s the fear of losing or changing a friendship for the worst. It would be easier if he wasn’t so smart, so kind, so respectful, so friendly, so beautiful–and so obvious. Yes, I said obvious. I don’t think he knows I know he has feelings for me, but he continuously gives me hints by brushing up against me, leaning on me, looking and smiling a bit too long and watching me. Yes, I said watching me. I’ve seen it way too many times to count and I just chuckle when he snaps his head away almost giving himself whiplash when I look over and “almost” catch him. I have very big eyes and I see what’s going on around me without looking directly at whatever is happening. I could just let this all go because I have been waiting years for him to straighten up, give in and make a move. It is clear it is up to me to give this a little push in the right direction. But, what to do–what to do? I wish I weren’t made up of a body full of nervousness so I can be like other people and speak my mind. Alright, alright—I’m going for it. Going for the gusto. Going for the kill. Going for the man of my dreams. Wish me luck!!!

*******I didn’t see the Grammy Awards this year (although I still plan to), but I can assure you Bruno Mars’ performance was one of the best of the night.  The kid has got “it” I tell ya.  From the second I heard Grenade, I was a fan of his.  In this performance, Bruno sounds great, looks great and performs even greater.  He is a highly influential asset to the music world and I know he will still be wowing us for many years to come.  Kudos dahlin! *******
